Much like the production methods itself, the origins of Glenrothes was borne from patience and persistence. It endured through an economic crisis soon after construction of the distillery began in 1878 with help from Reverend William Sharp from a nearby village, who knew that the completion of the distillery would dramatically improve fortunes of the local economy.
Over the past 100 years, the distillery has not only changed ownership multiple times but also managed to prosper after surviving fires and explosions. In 1999, Glenrothes was acquired by the Edrington Group, parent company of many well known brands such as The Macallan. In an interesting twist of fate, Edrington would sell the Glenrothes brand to Berry Bros. & Rudd in exchange for Cutty Shark Blended Scotch. Glenrothes was brought back in the Edrington family in 2017 at a time when Single Malts were gaining more popularity than ever.
Glenrothes features extended distillation times to give the Whisky a fruitier taste, making it an ideal liquid for blending. It features in Cutty Shark and Famous Grouse Blends. Since the remaining Single Malt production is so small, Glenrothes were one of the few distilleries to release vintages rather than following the industry norm of age-old bottles. The small releases and ability for drinkers to compare different production in different years made it a favourite for collectors. Edrington finally announced a change to the Glenrothes tradition in 2018, choosing to release the core range??in 10, 12, 18, 25 year old formats.
Glenrothes 2009 makes a special appearance in our "Classic Hong Kong Comics" series. Bottled in 2020 just after the original bottling changed format, we wanted to capture the magic of the vintage Glenrothes bottles. The special "Old Master??Q" comic cover featuring many expressions of the lead character depicts Glenrothes????? own long winding history. Maturation in a rare Ruby Port cask for 10 years brings out many fruit and complex tastes. Only 407 bottles produced for Whisky enthusiasts and collectors to savour!
